Do you KNOW why this is a good move (ha) for your weight loss & fitness goals?

 

Let's discuss.

 

 

WEIGHT LOSS:

 

1. When you work for brief intense periods your body can’t keep up with the demands for OXYGEN to keep the engine running. 

 

Oxygen = aerobic 

 

So next gear is to tap into sugar in our blood stream and stored sugar (glycogen) in your muscles. 

 

When we blow past that there’s a period where the body TAPS INTO FAT (AMPLIFYING FAT BURNING), converts it to glucose, and uses it for more on demand fuel. 

 

 

2. When we deplete our muscles of stored glycogen we need to REFILL them at some point (SOON). 

 

This offers a perfect space for MORE CARBS in order to bring balance back to your body. 

 

So, "Yes please!", and. "Thank you!", to that!

 

 

 

 

FITNESS:

 

If you want to get FIT FAST - do HIIT. 

 

Stressing your cardiovascular system in a controlled and reasonable way will give your body the straightforward instruction that it needs to be able to DO MORE. 

 

And the beautiful thing is when we give it a small/appropriate amount of rest and then GO again…

 

It will. 

 

Timed work and timed rest will condition your body to both RECOVER FASTER and also PERFORM BETTER. 

 

Our bodies are super obedient, and if we give ourselves a challenge (think short/doable - not suggesting jumping into a marathon), and then a period of rest…

 

We will rise to meet it the next time. 

 

Or the next session. 

 

It’s so cool. 

 

 

 

 

And lastly the caution that I’d make for both of these objectives is to use this style of working out consciously. 

 

HIIT is not the only, or even best (in my opinion), way of working out to lose fat. 

 

I personally think it is a GREAT addition to a longer cardio session (maybe 20-30 mins of each).

 

Also I believe it’s great to use it's glycogen depleting nature when you’re already PLANNING on having a more carb forward day. 

 

Doing HIIT with regularity will automatically jack up your need for CARBS and CALORIES. 

 

It can be super easy to simply GO FOR IT food wise following, which can turn your newly created deficit into a surplus. 

 

So USE this approach to match what’s going on in your social life and enjoy yourself even more when being strategic with your exercise. 

 

And lastly re FITNESS - DON’T DO HIIT ALL THE TIME. 

 

This style of exercise is TAXING. 

 

It REQUIRES rest and recovery following. 

 

That’s required for your muscles and also for your IMMUNE SYSTEM. 

 

It’s super easy to overdo it with HIIT and then find yourself suddenly sick. 

 

No bueno. 

 

So that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to the gym for the remainder of the week after you’ve done a serious HIIT session. 

 

But it does mean that you should do other LESS STRENUOUS things to enable your body to recover WHILE ALSO TAPPING INTO FAT for fuel. 

 

So DO GO FOR IT, AND make sure you pepper your week with more, "easy does it", cardio as well.

And if so and if you’d like to do such a thing - here’s a HIIT I LOVE doing on the stair climber. 

 

It’s intense but so manageable due to the amount of REST that’s included. 

 

 

 

And after this 30 min session is done - I either continue to walk slowly on the stairclimber, or I head to a treadmill and continue on for another 30 min at a manageable pace that makes me sweat, but also enables me to talk.
